why freekfly...........

i had been jumping for a year or so when i first saw people inverted and flying with some control. they called it freeflying. a guy named olav with some funny ideas about flying through the atmosphere came up with it and pioneered the sport. i wanted to do what these guys in the video did. freefly........ so a few friends and i started off, we never did the typical rw stuff anyways. we would always end up busting something and going into stand ups or just grabbing on and seeing how fast we could spin each other before the g's broke us apart. while it was a lot of fun for what it was worth, we weren't really flying our bodies. i do remember the first time i found out what a burble was. yeowwwww look out below cause here i come! i had heard about it and understood the theory behind it but i had never actually experienced it until i passed over my buddy jeff a good 20 feet up and wham! i found out what a burble was real fast.......

anyway, we started to experiment. trying to go head first......headdown. it was tough, don't arch, spread your legs, keep your legs out.....arms out. all we knew was look at the video and try to copy these guys. why reinvent the wheel, if it works for them........hoping from dz to dz around new england there weren't many others experimenting. freeflying was still viewed as this big unknown out there. everyone who was doing it was usually dressed in a jester outfit with colors mismatched from side to side and anything that looked a little different was always a good thing. enter stage left.......the new punks of skydiving. well, the flat flyers who didn't know about it called us freaks! after all we must not be right wanting to go head first right? 'let the freaks out first!' or last for that matter as long as they weren't near anyone else. then there was that whole exit order fiasco but we won't go there....... the freaks of skydiving, freeflyers......or as i like to call it.........freekfly

who knew it would catch on......
